The haumana wove a peʻahi (fan) to symbolize the peʻa (sail) of a waʻa (canoe).

This woven piece is a way for them to remember the moʻolelo of how pūhala came to Hawaiʻi through Pele’s encounter with a hala tree in the middle of the ocean.

We also discussed the importance of pūhala as a canoe plant carried on ocean voyages.
